The weather here has been super cold. When it’s this cold out I like to focus on making hats and scarves to keep my family warm. This crochet bead stitch hat is perfect for an older child or teenager. My son can be very picky about the hats he wears, and he loves this one.
This hat uses the bead stitch to make the stripes. You can find my Bead Stitch Tutorial here. I love the texture that this stitch adds to the stripes on the hat.
I made this hat using Big Twist Value yarn and a 6 mm crochet hook.
Crochet Bead Stitch Hat
Materials:
- Black Yarn
- Red Yarn
- 6.0mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Pattern:
(in black) Start with a magic ring
Round 1: 10 hdc inside ring, sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (20), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 3: (2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next stitch) repeat around (30), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 4: (hdc in first stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next stitch) repeat around (40), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 5: (2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches) repeat around (50), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 6: (hdc in first 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches) repeat around (60), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 7: (2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 5 stitches) repeat around (70), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 8: (hdc in first 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches) repeat around (80), sl st to first hdc, (switch to red) ch 3
Round 9: make a bead stitch in the second stitch and every other stitch around, dc in last stitch (40), (switch to black), sl st to ch 3, ch 2
Rounds 10-13: hdc in each stitch around (80), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 14: hdc in each stitch around (80), (switch to red), sl st to first hdc, ch 3
Round 15: make a bead stitch in the second stitch and every other stitch around, dc in last stitch (40), (switch to black), sl st to ch 3, ch 2
Rounds 16-19: hdc in each stitch around (80), sl st to first hdc, ch 2
Round 20: hdc in each stitch around (80), (switch to red) sl st to first stitch , ch 3
Round 21: dc in each stitch around (80), sl st to first stitch, ch 3
Round 22: (fpdc in first stitch, bpdc in next stitch) repeat around (80), sl st to first stitch, ch 3
Round 23: (fpdc in first stitch, bpdc in next stitch) repeat around (80), sl st to first stitch, fasten off.
My son loved how this crochet bead stitch hat turned out. He has been wearing it to school every day, and was pretty upset when he left it in his desk one day.
